The TASCAM Portable Digital Recorder is the recorder we use to record The Bunker Project podcast. The show is recorded using the Tascam’s line in input which captures the mixed audio from the Behringer mixing board. We rarely use it as field recorder, where the audio is being recorded using the built in microphones in the TASCAM itself. One of the episodes where we recorded a show using the TASCAM as the microphone was the interview with the head Brewmaster of Okanagan Springs Brewery, the creater of Brewmaster Black.
Tascam’s DR07 portable takes digital recording to an even smaller, more affordable package. A pair of highly-sensitive built in mics captures a wide stereo image, recording in either MP3 or 16/24-bit WAV format. The DR07nis powered by AA batteries and it transfers files to a computer using a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. The versatile recorder even includes a windscreen, tripod stand mount and 2GB SD card to start recording right away

I am happy with my TASCAM DR07 recorder. It has served me well over the last few years recording both the Bunker Project and the Health Empowerment News podcasts. The only issue I have with the recorder is a glitch which causes the recorder to take 8 hours to format an SD card. I discovered this before a Bunker Project episode began while I was trying to format an SD card. It was taking a long time so I googled it to see if it was normal to take several minutes to format a card. The forum I read said that it takes 8 hours to format a card. Not the best situation when you are about to start recording.
The Tascam DR07 has a known issue with formatting the Micro SD card. When you format a card it actually takes 4 hours or more to format. Not a good idea when your in a rush.
As usual, I’m including a comparison table so you can see other products side by side. In this comparison we are looking at the Zoom H1, the DR1 and the Tascam DR-1.
Let me know what you think of these products. Do you have a recommendation for a digital recorder?
