Are you addicted to Social Media?
A few weeks ago I heard a radio personality talking about a recent survey that found Canadians are now spending more time on the internet than watching TV. It took a while for the boob tube to be defeated but it could be due to an epidemic of social media addiction.
A recent Retrevo Gadgetology study found that people are spending a good portion of their free time using social media to connect with friends, family and businesses. Social Media allows people to play games, share information and jokes, promote their products or services, promote ideas among others. Why spend so much time using social media? Because it can be both entertainment and education at the same time. It is an easy way to keep in touch with your social circle and can enhance productivity if used efficiently. But are people using social media too much?
According to Retrevo Gadgetology study, social media site usage is borderline obsessive!
I can understand maybe interrupting a meal to use social media, during a meeting is pushing it and on the toilet… come on! But 11% of those under 25 and 7% of those over 25 said they would accept an electronic message during sex! Who are these people?… sorry honey but I must tweet now!!!
Social Media killed the News Anchor Star?
16% of respondents said they use social media sites as their source of daily news. With the print media industry in decline due to online competition is social media going to kill traditional television news programming? Only time will tell but I’ll put my cash on social media as the victor in this one.
Balance
Social Media can be fun, educational, socially rewarding, profitable and cool! But it can also waste time and take over your life. Much like television (but possibly more so), social media can be addictive. Finding a balance is important so you don’t end up tweeting your life away.
