There are many reasons why people start podcasting.
Some people podcast as a hobby and others are podcasting professionally. Some people do it for the money but the vast majority do it out of passion for their niche topic.
Instead of listing all the specific reasons why a podcaster becomes a podcaster I’m going to list 6 types of people that become podcasters.
6 types of People that become podcasters:
- The Passionate Person
- The Expert
- The Marketer
- The Teacher
- The Entertainer
- The Networker
The Passionate Podcaster:
You have an almost obsessive like passion about your topic and you feel the need to express yourself by sharing your passion in a podcast. You get excited by this topic and your listeners feed off of your enthusiasm in every episode.
You are able to continue podcasting week after week despite the fact that podcasting requires a significant investment in time and energy.
It is your passion that keeps you going when you aren’t getting a lot of traction from your show right out the gate.
Why? Because you would do this work for free and in fact you are!
Maybe someday you will make some money from your show but that isn’t why you got into it.
You are podcasting out of pure love for your niche.
The Expert Podcaster:
You are a true expert in your niche. You have developed a solid knowledge base over many years of practice and training.
You have decided that you want to start a podcast because you want to share your knowledge with the world.
You may be motivated to podcast by the desire to be recognized for your position in your industry. With a podcast you can establish yourself as a thought leader and you will easily be able to demonstrate your expertise every week to your audience.
The Selling Podcaster:
As a marketer you recognize the value of podcasting as a communication tool.
You started your podcast with the goal of selling products and services. Or maybe even advertisers and sponsorships. You will attempt to build an audience and establish trust through authenticity and providing value through your free content every week.
If you are only podcasting as a marketer you may succumb to the dreaded Pod Fade disease that inflicts those that are not inoculated with a solid dose of passion.
If you survive into the double digit episode numbers you will have a chance achieving your goal eventually.
The Teaching Podcaster:
You are natural teacher.
You have the ability to easily communicate “how to do something” to your students. You can motivate and encourage people to learn. You are podcasting because it is just another medium for you to pursue your vocation.
People with an aptitude for teaching make good podcasters because podcast listeners are often subscribing because they want to learn. Teachers have the communication skills and presentation ability already and may find it easier to get behind the mic when starting out.
The Entertaining Podcaster:
As a story teller, actor or comedian your true calling is to entertain.
You have been entertaining for years and now your podcast is just another platform for you to practice your trade. You are also very adept at delivering your message and this gives you a strong advantage over others.

You recognize podcasting is a great way to get in front of a specific niche audience.
You also see the potential for podcasting to get you past the gate keeper and interacting with people that you otherwise wouldn’t.
As a podcaster you are essentially the media. You can offer your prospects the ability to get in front of your audience in an interview.
Podcasters interview famous authors, CEO’s, actors, politicians, artists and other podcasters. As a networker the prospect of making money from your show may not interest you much. Your in the game to meet people.
