The Bunker Project Show 56 Notes:
We start off the show with another Maven Round Table Introduction…
Bonnie, the Twitter Maven is in the house… we talk about the number of tweets she did during the last show… only 3 because she was so excited about what we were talking about…
David Chick, the Recording Maven is in the house as well… He does a podcast called Inside Home Recording check it out over at www.insidehomerecording.com. Dave tries to get the show out every two weeks…
Bob asks Dave if he uses Libsyn… of course, he does. He does a mp3 version and an enhanced version.
And Satomi, the Tax Maven is in the house! She is launching her new website… www.goodbyetax.com.
And a first timer, Carola from the Gem Gallery.
The German Maven, Astrid is in the house and she is a Social Media journalist. Bob said he hopes she wrote some nice things about The Bunker Project.
The Car Maven is also in the house… He helps people save money by knowing what to say at the dealership. www.lovebuyingcars.com
And we have Rhasad in the house… WordPress Maven.
We also have the Hat Maven, Kurt Hemingway – Website Developer Extraordinaire!!!
He develops business grade websites.
Camila Zen is in the house and she is very exotic!
She made up her last name using numerology.
Bob wants to know if The Bunker Project works well with numerology…
And Twisted_Majic, James – The Gaming Maven is in the house and he is thinking of changing his name to twisted majic…
The Hat Maven says Wix.com could probably figure out the numerology on his new name.
James says it is very important to stress test your game before you sell it… Bob utters a profanity which was surgically removed in post production. There goes live to hard drive!
Bonnie says game testers don’t get hair cuts or shower so they have to work in there own room because they smell.
Kurt says he went to the washroom in his pants five times and…
And now… on with the show… We get into Podcasting with our Recording Maven but first James has a question about the name of the Inside Home Recording podcast… he asks why he didn’t name it The Chicktionary?
Daves personal site is www.gethatched.ca.
Dave starts talking about the content of the Inside Home Recording podcast and our SD Card ran out room so we had to switch SD cards on the fly… thanks to Bonnie who happened to have an extra SD card on hand!
Dave explains that he wasn’t the founder of the show and it had changed hands with himself and his co-host who recently past away due to complications of cancer. He is the sole host now and brings in guest hosts.
The show focusses on prosumer and studio owners who want to learn more about audio gear and recording. Musicians and Voice Over Artists are interested in the show.
Bob reflects on when he first met Dave at a Meetup for Recordists…
Digression about what a single type of guy is?
Bob gets taken down by our new guest… And asks a question about getting into podcasting. He wants to get into podcasting but not in a big gear way…
Andrew explains how to get started with a podcast by just using a USB headset with a boom mic… a little bit of a debate over using a digital recorder.
We talk about the pros and cons of buying cheap gear vs more expensive and higher quality.
Bob talks about doing a podcast in the closet… going inside the closet podcast.
Dave prefers dynamic microphones because they don’t need phantom power and doesn’t pick up as much ambient noise. Bob asks if phantom power is a spiritual thing…
Dave explains how it all works.
A condenser mic is much more sensitive.
Podcasters who don’t have a sound treated room should use a dynamic mic. Dave likes the setup at the Bunker Project with the separate room and moving blankets.
James asks about a shotgun mic and Bob says they are only good for bank jobs.
Kurt asks at what point should you spend more money on gear?
Dave says just get into it and play with it and then decide to buy more gear as you upgrade your sound.
Andrew says it is a disease… continually needing to get new gear.
Some talk about Hard – Limiter – Gates.
We talk about the new ground loop isolator we got but haven’t hooked up yet to eliminate some hums from the audio caused by electrical noise.
Back to the original question…
Andrew talks about his initial gear and how he slowly upgraded everything.
We talk about mics… rode, shure and more…
Bono from U2 exclusively uses the shure sm58.
Kurt asks how long a podcast should be?
Dave says Twit is a little long. His show, Inside Home Recording, is about an hour. The Bunker Project is 40 minutes to 1 hour.
Andrew brings up our interview with Alan Middleton and his University Study on podcasting.
Bob says the length of the podcast should depend on how much weight you want to lose (if you listen on the exercise bike).
Bob talks about people who listen back to the first episode… Dave said he doesn’t understand how people do that. Bob says the podcastanswerman is the only show he went back and listened to all the episodes from the beginning.
Kurt brings up the WTF podcast and Andrew tells a story about that podcast and inadvertently utters a profanity… which has also been surgically removed in post production.
James talks about the Monty Python sketch about the usages of the word F and his experience with it.
Kurt listens to many podcasts that range in time… he is ok with 40 minutes but if it goes over an hour he gets annoyed.
Andrew says Leo Laporte can get away with a two-hour podcast because half of the show is ads.
James wants to know if a podcast listener can be hypnotized to listen longer… The Zen Maven answers the question beautifully.
Andrew tries to hypnotize the audience…
Our Silent Maven speaks… she suggests Dead TV.
Andrew asks the Hat Maven which episode he started listening to The Bunker Project and if he went back and listened to all the past shows.
He started listening to episode 10 and listened to them all and by the time he caught up he was so annoyed by Bob’s nasally voice…
Andrew asks if Kurt was the facebook guy using an alias.
Andrew’s mic is starting to be glitchy…
A little gaming talk… as they remember the old episodes.
A little fiver.com talk… just what can you get for $5.
Andrew’s mic isn’t working so he has to grab Bob’s mic…
Kurt says all of sudden Andrew’s voice is nasally… It is the mic that causing the Nasalness!
And on that nasal note, the show is over….
